In an era where the sky is the limit, it seems like not many people are actually trying to hit that target. Before I get started on my rant, I just want to put it out there that I, myself, fall into this category that I am about to talk about. I'm speaking upon the current state of fashion, most
notably, the "
streetwear" trend. Everyone out there should know what I'm talking about: the New Era caps, fresh t-shirts with some catchy message about sneakers, girls, music, etc. Lets not forget the skinny jeans and of course, saving the best for last, the fresh steps on the feet; I'm talking about SNEAKERS!!! Whether it be
Jordans, SB Dunks, or Vans, the sneakers are the most important factor in the
streetwear scene. So what's my point?
The point I'm trying to make is that everyone and their momma is dressing like this. It has gotten pretty ridiculous. I walk through the halls at Long Beach State University, and I can't help but to notice how redundant the
likelihood of me seeing someone dressing "hipster" is.
Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love these underground brands. From The Hundreds to Bobby Fresh to Playing For Keeps to even Capitol. How can i forget Crooks & Castles, Kr3w, Triumvir, and
RockSmith. The list can go on forever (Note:
LRG is not
streetwear. It's mainstream now). I think the boutiques that sell these brands are the greatest things on earth. They have an artistic look to them that makes paying $35 for a t-shirt or $50 for a hat not so bad.
The problem I see is that too much of something is never good. When something gets too hyped up, it eventually ceases to exist, meaning this trend will be played out. I don't see this happening anytime soon, but I'm just speaking for the future. If you recall back not too long ago,
Fubu was the
ish. Everyone had a
Fubu 05 Jersey in their closet. Where's
Fubu now? At your local Ross and
Marshalls,
thats where. The comparison between
Fubu and
streetwear clothing
isn't a good one because
streetwear clothing isn't mainstream and public like that, but I'm just trying to get my point across. Even though this trend is getting too popular, I don't want it to get even more over hyped than it already is and ruined. And the way for that to happen is for a growing number of
hypebeast to continue to flock onto the latest trends.
So in conclusion, I just ask everyone to not do what is hot at the moment, but to do what you feel is yourself. Don't try to be like everyone else. Be yourself. Who knows. Maybe your style will become the next big thing and you can be labeled as a trendsetter. I'm going to also try to do this so I'm not just being a hypocrite. And one more thing I ask of everyone: If you ever see an Against All Odds store built in a mall near year, please petition to get it closed down immediately!!!! They are known to spread that disease know as "hype". And as we all know, HYPE KILLS!!!!!!
